The foundation stone for St John's Church was laid in 1836, and the church completed two years later at a cost of £2600. It stands on the northern edge of town, near the Rouge Rue, and was 'intended wholly for the poorer classes of the inhabitants' (Brett, Buildings in the town and parish of St Peter Port).
