Fort George

Fort George (?)
Untitled. Publisher probably Mr Woodward.

I'm very grateful to Michael de Carteret for providing the following information on this card. It's a photograph of the Second Battalion of the Green Howards marching behind the French Army band of the 25th Light Infantry Regiment from Cherbourg, on 7 July 1914, just before the outbreak of war. The Green Howards were stationed at Fort George between 1913-14 and on this particular day they were marching to Candie Gardens to take part in the ceremony to unveil the statue of Victor Hugo. At the head of the procession are Lt. Col. Charles King, Commanding Officer, and adjutant Captain Forsyth; both were killed in action early in the War, in October 1914. The photograph was apparently taken by a Mr Woodward, who had a studio at the corner of Havilland Street and the Grange.
